Carson McCullers ranks as one of the outstanding Southern American women writers in the twentieth-century American literary history. Her novella The Ballad of the Sad Café is generally regarded as her best work. However, it has seldom been noted that upon the publication of this work the author was spiritually plagued by accusations of “anti-Semitism”. A brief analysis of this obvious case of “overinterpretation” with regard to its specific historical contexts may well contribute to the understanding of the author's stand against the mainstream ideology of her times.
