On the Spirit and Form in the Translation of Poetry

诗歌是意、形和音完美结合的艺术整体。诗歌翻译中的“形似”和“神似”的结合不仅是必须的，而且也是可能的。“形似”是翻译中矛盾的主要方面，离开了“形似”，就谈不上“神似”。抓住“形似”这个关键，全面处理好“意”和“音”的关系，才能在译文中再现原作的风姿。

Poetry is a perfect artistic whole of sense, form and sound. The combination of the similarities in form and spirit in translation is both indispensable and possible. The similarity in form is the principal aspect (or element) in the contradiction; without it, there will be no similarity in spirit. The stress on the similarity in form in translation is the key in successfully dealing with the relationship between sense, form and sound; only in this way, can we reproduce the charm and style of the original.
