This paper presents the theory and methods for reverse engineering of the serial data transfer protocols. The composing of hardware environment and the selection of monitoring software used are given. The main steps and procedures used by reverse engineering of serial data transfer protocols are also described with an application. As a conclusion, the paper proposes the needs of standardization of the protocol.
