Fiction of the immigrant life is an important ge nre of the Australian fiction of the colonial period. It is no less significant, as the writer of the article sees it, than the “Convict fiction” that is uniq ue to Australian literature. As a section of the book A History of the Oceanic Literature that the writer is undertaking to write, this article traces the g enesis, development and distinctive features of this type of writing in hopes of providing an overall and clear picture of it to the reading public. Major write rs and their representative works in this field are discussed.
