An Interpretation of the Character MM

在战国新蔡楚简中有一“”字,此字即典籍中用作衅礼之“”字。其重要性在于它印证了文献中所记衅礼以及与其相关事物的可信,这对于先秦时期礼制的研究无疑是非常重要的。

Among the inscriptions on the Xincai bamboo slips of the Chu state dating from the WarringStates period, the character MM appears. This character is in fact the glyph MM associated with theXin Ritual described in ancient texts and documents. The significance of this interpretation is thatit substantiates the existence of the Xin Ritual known only from texts and also from related events.This is of great significance for the study of the system of rites in the pre-Qin period.
