当今地球科学的发展为何要与几百年前的欧洲文艺复兴联系起来?这是近年来国际地学战略发展趋势,是2004年8月即将召开的第32届国际地质大会的主题之一.当前全球范围内的一个重要任务是地球科学知识的创新、应用和传播来推动人类对自然界、社会和自我的认识进程.

32nd the International Geological Congress will be held in Florence of Italy in August 2004. The congress tneme is From the Mediterranean Area Toward a Global Geological Renaissance. From the early 14th to the late 16th century, a revival of interest in the values and arts of Greece and Rome led to a golden age of cultural blending and innovation, the First Scientific Revolution, and an era of Western industrial culture. Renaissance is the cradle of modern geology. At present, one of important targets all over the global is the innovation, usage and spread of the earth science knowledge to push the course of human s understanding to nature, society and mankind-self in order to realize the harmonious co-existance of human and nature, and the coordinated and sustainable development of economy and society. The era calls for a new turn of Renaissance, and a new turn of Renaissance calls for the renaissance of the earth science culture.
