摘要
After the war, the negotiation of Japan’s war reparations to the Southeast Asian nations was procrastinated or even suspended for a long time. Then in the middle and late 1950s, the problem was solved through negotiation. Superficially, the main factor that owes to the solution to that issue is that Japan recovered and developed in its economy and had the economic power to compensate those countries. Yet there are several reasons behind it to promote that solution. One reason is that Japan urgently needed to occupy Southeast Asian market to further develop its own economy. The second reason is that the United States, aiming at containing socialist influence during the Cold War, secretly made great efforts to support Japan and the third one is the Southeast Asian nations faced many specific and practical problems, so they had to make some concessions. Therefore, under such historical conditions, the nature for the so called reparations has changed and the reparation has become a tool for Japan to expand its force in that region.
