Based on Freudian theory about the structure of the mind (Id, Ego, Superego) , the paper analyzes the rationality of the three protagonists' destinies in The Scarlet Letter by Nathanial Hawthorne, a great American writer. Oversuppression of superego and overrelease of id absolutely lead to the collapse of ego; only when the rivalry between id and superego comes to a balance, the three can develop into an integrated personality.
