The Bluest Eye is the debut of the American black writer,Toni Morrison. Published in 1970,the novel tells a tragic story of a black little girl who, living in a north urban town in 1940s,prays for the bluest eye and finally falls apart into madness. By analyzing symbolism in ″the bluest eye″ in the novel, this thesis presents a point of view: the truth behind the context of the novel is that the practical and sensible way for the black people to survive in the white culture is to maintain the ethical heritage rather than that of distorted mentality of black people in the dominant master culture.
