In order to meet the needs for changing health service, the UCSF developed a new curriculum based on the bio-psycho-social model in 2001. The new curriculum was divided into three stages spanning four years: the Essential Core, the Clinical Core, and Advanced Studies. This article summarizes the role of the social and behavioral sciences in the essential blocks, each centered on clinical cases. Basic thematic area, content illustration, the culture of medicine, and process considerations are presented. Special challenges and limitation are also discussed.
