Bertha Mason who was imprisoned in the attic of Thornfield in Jane Eyre is not a mad woman. What she did each time is likely to have been done by a wise woman. She is not a foil but a separated clue in the process of Jane and Rochester's love story. It reveals the hard situation of women who lost their right of speaking and sovereignty which worked in concert with the clue that Jane asked for the right of women.
