On the Prison System of Pre-Ch'in Period

监狱是国家机器的重要组成部分 ,先秦时期 ,随着国家职能逐步增强 ,各项监狱管理制度也在不断完善。从商代始 ,监狱在限制囚犯自由的同时 ,也强制被囚者服劳役。周代已实行惩罚和教育相结合的原则 。

The prison is important component of state apparatus. With the reinforcement of state function,the prison systems had been further completed in the period of Pre-Ch'in. The prisoners not only had been limited freedom but also forced to do hard physical word in Shang-dynasty. The ruling class of Zhou-dynasty carried out the principle of combination punishment with education, which brought about far _reaching influence to later periods.
