On Cohesion of 'Missing Links' in Light of Relevance Theory

"空环"衔接是一种普遍的语言现象,是隐性衔接的标志。关联理论可对"空环"衔接做出较有力的阐释。通过交际双方共有知识、语境信息和逻辑信息等可以推导出对话的反应话轮中因"空缺"而隐含的会话含意,这有助于我们正确认识"空环"衔接现象,提高我们的语言交际能力。

This paper proposes a general theory of conversational cohesions that are divided into two types: the explicit cohesion and the implicit cohesion. As the token of the latter, missing links are supposed to be expounded forcefully with the aid of Relevance Theory. From the cohesion of missing links in dialogues conversational implicature is inferred by means of the shared knowledge of the speaker and the hearer, the contextual information as well as logical information, which undoubtedly helps us learn more about missing links and improve our verbal communicative competence.
