Joseph Conrad's social novel Nostromo becomes a classic in the twentieth century with its epically extensive scenes, original construction and profound ideology. But the study of it in China is far from being enough. This paper aims at interpreting the novel with the technique of 'defamiliarization', produced by Russian Formalism, in the light of its language, plot and structure. It holds that in Nostromo Conrad deforms his way of handling the language, presenting the plot and constructing his story to heighten the aesthetic value of the novel; the employment of the technique of 'defamiliarization' mainly leads to its great success.
