The paper analyses the gains from an appreciation of a country's currency. Adam Smith's model of absolute advantage is rectified to examine the welfare effect of the appreciation. Empirical analysis utilizing this model indicates that Japan gains from an appreciation of Japanese Yen during its stable growth period. The enlightenment is that the appreciation of RMB will increase our country's welfare.
