Understanding the Religious Meaning of the Pictorial Stone Coffins of Han Dynasty

Although Han period pictorial stone coffins have their special local features, they share the common religious belief with other Han stone carvings in their main contents. Han pictorial stone coffins appeared and spread in Eastern Han dynasty. They were mainly distributed in Sichuan Basin as the center. They represented chiefly the decendents' desire of ascending to the fairyland. By recognizing the meaning of the 'Heaven gate' and the 'fairyland', we can get a unique and visual angle to understand the religious belief of Han dynasty.
