On the Connection Principle of the Critical Interpretation of an Ancient Text

研究训诂学必须贯彻联系性原则。所谓联系性原则,就是要坚持辩证法的观点,不要孤立地研究词义。这有两 方面的涵义:一是要把词义的解释研究同音韵学、文字学、语法学、修辞学等有关学科联系起来;一是要把词义的研究 与文化历史联系起来。

In defining ancient Chinese Characters, we must cany out the connection principle while studying critical interpretation of ancient texts. What is called connection principle is we should adhere to the view of dialectics, not just study the meaning of a word in isolation. It includes two sides; first, to connect the meaning of a word explanation research with relevant disciplines, such as phonology, philology, grammar studying, rhetoric,etc. second, to relate research of the meaning of a word with culture history.
