Lord of the Flies, the Coral Island, and Robinson Crusoe come from different times, but each of the authors employs the same technique: isolating the hero(es) on an island. Ballantyne's Characters are presented as fundamentally good, whereas Defoe's & Golding's are aware that evil is in themselves. Robinson Crusoe is a realistic novel & glorifies the individual's creative energy & his reliance on God to keep him on the right path; The Coral Island is a clear expression of the British Empire ethos presented in a romance meant for both instruction & entertainment of its children; Lord of the Flies is a fable presenting a society of children as a microcosm of the adult world. It explodes the myth of innocence and takes us back to the problem of evil misplaced by Ballantyne in 'the other' & oversimplified by Defoe.
