山川早水的《巴蜀》从一个外国人的角度,对清末四川民间风情的记载十分深入全面,特别是对当时下层社会的记载,如旌表做假、峡江私窑、奉节歌妓、官场应酬、旅店风俗、救生红船等风俗的记载,许多是同时代国内文献记载所缺乏的,也是同时代西方人记载所没有的,对于今天我们了解和研究当时的真实社会风情有十分重要的作用。《巴蜀》一书清末在日本的出版,对近代日本人对于长江上游的踏察调查有一个起始点的作用,研究《巴蜀》一书有助于我们认识近代日本对中国政治经济文化军事侵略的背景。

It is the first time to introduce and study this book—'Ba-shu'which was written by shan chuan zao shui, a Japanese tourist, one hundred years ago. In this thesis, the author believes that 'Ba shu' is the most comprehensive travel notes about Sichuan in modern history.From a foreigner's point of view. This travel notes recorded the local customs of Sichuan in the late Qing Dynasty thoroughly and profoundly.especially the life of the lower—class society, most of which are lack in other contemporary civil documents and absent in the westerner's recordings. Even today it is very significant for us to appreciate and research into the real social customs in those days. With the help of these notes.'Ba-shu' which was published in Japan in the late Qing Dynasty functions as the starting-point of the on-the-spot investigation on the up-stream of ChangJiang River for Japanese in modern history. By researching into 'Ba-shu', it will also deepen our recognition of the background in which Japan conducted its invasion into China in politics, economics, culture and military affairs in modern history.
