The valediction of Reginald Johnston made a review on the Englishmen’s thirsty-two-year colonial governance in Weihaiwei. Reading this valediction is helpful for us to understand both the legal cultural environment on which the legal system of Weihaiwei rented by England lived and the legal thinking of Johnston who was the chief participant in making and carrying out the legal system. This article holds that “Confucianization” is the core of “becoming more of Chinese” of both Johnston himself and the governance in Weihaiwei rented by England, which contributed a lot to the “identity” the English colonial governance obtained.
