Common Errors in the Translation of Titles and Abstracts of Medical Papers

根据笔者对其所编审的150篇医学论文英文摘要的回顾分析,把摘要和标题汉译英中的常见错误归纳为七个方面:标题不简练、目的句不规范、时态混乱、主要部分残缺、数字和缩略语表达不规范、英文摘要与汉语原文不对应等。医学论文摘要是信息型摘要,重点在于方法、结果和结论。摘要写作遵循客观、写实的原则,应避免主观评论和感情色彩。

Based on the authors' analysis and examination of 150 abstracts of medical papers, seven common types of errors pertaining to the translation of the titles and abstracts of medical papers are identified for discussion: redundant titles, fragmentary key sentences, incorrect tenses, incomplete main parts, non-standard expression of numbers and acronyms, inconsistency between the original and the English version, and others. Abstracts of medical papers are informative in nature and consist of three main components-method, result and conclusion. The writing of abstracts should follow the principles of objective and realistic writing; subjective evaluation and emotional expressions should be avoided.
