经过20多年的改革开放,北京流通业发生了巨大变化.商品流通规模不断扩大,现代流通方式迅速发展,多元化市场格局基本形成,设施建设迈上新的台阶,行业经营管理水平日益提高,流通业在首都经济和社会发展中的地位和作用进一步增强,正在逐步发展成为重要的支柱产业.

Expansion of the business scale and improvement of the efficiency have made more contribution to the capital economy and society. In Beijing, the amount of commodity purchase and sale in 2001 is 36 times larger than one in 1978, up to RMB 676.79 billion. The retail amount of social consumable in 2001 increases to RMB 159.35 billion, 35 times larger than 1978'. In the first ten months of 2002, the retail amount of social consumable reaches 143.54 billion, 33.9 times larger than the total amount in 1990. The added value realized in commerce in 2001 is 23.78 billion, accounting for 8.4% of GDP of the year and nearly 28.7 times larger than one in 1978. In the first ten months of 2002, the proportion of the added value realized in commerce to GDP runs to the third place, only next to production and finance & insurance industry. The number of employees in commerce industry is up to 1.46 million, creating the history record and accounting for 23% of the total employees in Beijing. Commerce industry has been a major channel for providing employment opportunities, its employees increasing 88% compared with 1900.
