Mu Dan's Poems and Traditional Chinese Culture

穆旦虽然是一位现代诗人 ,努力保持着与传统的距离 ,但不自觉间 ,又与传统发生着种种联系。他不仅接纳了传统文化中与现代观念相符合的部分 ,同时也能站在现代立场上对传统文化中的消极因素作出深刻批判 ;不仅对精英文化有着深刻的理解和领悟 ,而且对民间文化也有丰富的浸染。他的诗歌形式传统痕迹较少 ,但却不能割断传统的脐带 ,在语言运用和意象营造上 ,仍然可以见出传统文学的印记。穆旦是中国人 ,他的诗不是舶来品 ,而是地道的现代汉诗 ,是对悠久的民族文化的继承和发展。

While Mu Dan, a modern poet, tries to keep a distance from tradition, he establishes various kinds of contact with tradition unconsciously. He not only adopts the part in traditional culture which accords with modern concept, but also criticizes deeply the negative factors of traditional culture in modern standpoint. On the one hand, he makes a thorough understanding and comprehension of essential culture, but on the other hand, he is involved widely in folk culture. He presents little sign of tradition in his poetic form, but he can't cut off connections with tradition; for marks of traditional literature can be seen in his usage of language and construction of image. Mu Dan is a Chinese, whose poems are not foreign copies, but typical modern Chinese poems, which are inheritance and development of age-old national culture.
