曾朴的《孽海花》是晚清四大谴责小说之一,作品通过叙述带有鲜明时代特征的内容和描写有所指的人物,暴露了封建统治阶级腐朽黑暗,暗示了封建社会的必将灭亡,从而表达了要求革命向往民主的思想以及强烈的爱国主义思想。

Nie Haihua by Zeng Pu is one of the Four Criticisms of the late Qing Dynasty. The works reveals the feudal ruling class's decadence and dark rule and hints the destruction of fedual sociaty by the distinctive narrations of the times and the de- scription of the heros. The author expresses his need of revolution and the long for democracy and the strong patriotism.
