In the 20th century the reference of expressions raised by Frege raised touched off a debate lasting over half a century. The debate resulted in the change of the research in reference from semantic analysis to pragmatic analysis. Russell's research in the reference of the descriptions represents classical semantic analysis while Strawson, Donnellan and Kripke analyze the reference of expressions from the perspective of the speaker's intention and context, hence making the research more profound.
