THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY (1881)is acknowledged as a representative work of Henry James,one of famous American writers.James,who is known as a founder of psychological realistic novels,was adept in applying the artistry of psychological analysis to the novel,transferring the artistically expressive objects in the novel from external events to characters inner world.And once more,James used the international theme as his central material for his creation,and by adopting the device of metaphor,depicted the whole psychological process of a nave and simple American girl who,in order to purser freedom and independence,went to Europe alone and whose identity was finally destroyed by the“freedom”she had pursued.In its own way the ironical artistic effect the novel has achieved has established Henry James as a great American novelist.
