读阿诺德《文化与无政府状态》

《文化与无政府状态》是阿诺德文化理论的代表作。他认为,文化作为精神生活,它通过求知来达成人格的完善,进而化之为社会的完善。这表现了其文化救世的思想。但阿诺德所说的文化不是大众文化,而是精英文化,是少数人的专利。在阿诺德看来,处在文化对立面上的不是外在的物质文明,而是缺失秩序和规范的"无政府状态",应当支持当权者镇压无政府状态;文化也是无政府状态的最为坚决的敌人。这种文化理念,能在多大程度上拯救那个时代,确实令人怀疑。

Culture and Anarchy is Arnold′s representative works.As mental life,he thought culture could perfect person′s character and also perfect the society,showing the thought of saving the world by culture.But his so-called culture,was the culture for master,the patent for minority,not the culture for the public.Arnold thought that the oppsite of culture was disorder and anarchy,not material civilization,and that people should support the governors to put down anarchy.Culture was the enermy of anarchy.We doubt how much the views of culture could save the society at that time.
