《村子》是福克纳关于斯诺普斯三部曲中最为精彩和绚丽的第一部。通过描绘带着泥土气息的南方一个乡村的全幅景貌,表现了福克纳对古老的乡土文化的深切眷恋和精神家园的孜孜以求;通过描绘代表工商势力———弗莱姆的崛起,法国人湾和尤拉的败落,以及代表南方乡村———拉特利夫与弗莱姆的对抗,福克纳表达了对南方传统文明的失落感到无限惋惜和无所适从,同时也是对资本主义工商势力的强有力的鞭苔,反映了福克纳对人和社会的深刻忧虑以及对人性复归的渴望。
In the trilogy of Snopes, The Hamlet is the most wonderful and excellent. Faulkner elaborately portrays a panorama of a Southern countryside with the breath of earth and a list of dramatic characters, which represents a deep souvenir for the venerable southern culture and for the process of seeking spiritual homeland. In the face of the uprising of Flem, the representative of bourgeoisie influence and of the decline of the Frenchman's Bend, the representative of defeated Southern Community, Faulkner feels infinite worry and compassion towards the lostness of southern traditional civilization. Besides the whip of bourgeoisie influence, there is calling for renewal of humanity under a reflection to the consequence of contemporary industrial society and a worry to man and his environment.
