长期以来,对于美国浪漫主义作家纳撒尼尔·霍桑在《红字》中塑造的人物罗杰·齐灵渥斯,国内外评论家大多数把他解读为善恶冲突中的可耻代表,一个复仇心切的魔鬼撒旦。但细读小说文本可发现,齐灵渥斯实际也是一个婚姻的受害者,一个清教统治下夫权的牺牲品,一个从未得到人间真情的可怜而痛苦的人。

Many critics at home and abroad observe that the character, Roger Chillingworth, in The Scarlet Letter by American romantic writer Nathaniel Hawthorne was an ignominious symbol of good and evil conflict, and a devil Satan. Yet a close study of the text reveals that such observation is open to question. the real meaning hidden in the text is that Chillingworth, in fact, is also a victim of marriage and Puritan Society. And what's more, he is a pitiable and painful person who never gets any real feeling from man's world.
