This paper presents systematically the concept, relevant theories, technology and the latest development on a recent advanced processing in materials science——self propagation hightemperature synthesis (SHS), based on the literatures and the experimental results. Attention is focused on the chemistry of combustion and materials science. Finally, it points out that great attention should be paid to several research fields in the future.
