This paper is an attempt to show whether or not the play of Edward III was written by William Shakespeare, through the analysis of its historical background, its theme and content, and its aesthetic features, which turned out to be characteristic of plays of the English Renaissance. My conclusion is that the play couldn't have been written entirely by Shakespeare, but part of it was most probably his composition. Therefore, the inclusion of the play into the 1997 edition of Riverside Shakespeare is justifiable.
