On Hawthorne's irrational vision of science

霍桑生活在美国资本主义上升与发展的时代 ,在时代变迁面前 ,在宗教与科学的冲突面前 ,他的茫然与困惑集中表现在他对科学技术发展的非理性的否定上。他从宗教偏见及人文主义立场出发 ,往往错误地把智力的发展与良知和情感的萎缩联系起来 ,否定人类征服自然界的一切努力 ,怀疑和否定科学技术的进步 ,丑化献身科学、不惜牺牲一切乃至个人生命的人。

Hawthorne lived in a period when American capitalist economy was developing rapidly. Confronted with dramatically changing age and the conflict between religion and science, his bewilderment focused on his irrational negative attitude toward science. He negated all human efforts to conquer the nature and often wrongly connected intellectual attainment with the withering of conscience and feeling, and further negated scientific and technological progress, vilifying all those devoted to science.
