Any language bears a lot of cultural connotations. A figurative expression is a vigorous technique of expression in human languages. In the long course of history, varied and colourful figurative expressions have been created and accumulated in English and Chinese, but owing to the differences of associations resulting from the respective national characteristics of the two languages, English and Chinese figurative expressions have become a major barrier in the teaching and learning of foreign languages. For this reason, it is necessary to study the national characteristics of English and Chinese figurative expressions and clarify their respective cultural connotations.
