This paper stresses the great effect of social environment on love and marriage by analyzing XU Zhi-mo's love and marriages with three ladies:LIN Hui-yin,LU Xiao-man and ZHANG You-yi.Deep-rooted feudal consciousness prevented people's desire for freedom of individuality and happy marriage during the May4th Period.This paper also praises XU Zhi-mo and some other famous men of letters for their bravery to break free from feudal conventions.
