The present paper is a review of the development of the study of the basic types of logical statement, whichbegan with Aristotle and underwent major changes with Brentano and Marty. The claim made by the latter that there does exist two t ypes of logical statement, i.e. cat egorical statement and thetic statement, has been supported by linguistic evidence from different languages, especiall y in the last thirty years. The distinction is shown to be reflected in the different syntactic behavior, semantic property and intonation pattern of the two types of sentences and related to the different interpretations of the NP-subject. Because of it s close relationship with syntactic, semantic and prosodic factors, t he study of the basic types of logical statement is shown to have special significance for the major fields of linguistic studies, although the noti on of logical statement itsel f is argued to be pragmatic i n nature and non-derivable from other grammatical categories.
