本文对语用学新著《语用意义和认知》(Pragmatic Meaning and Cognition. By Sophia A. Marmaridou. Amsterdam: John Benjimins Publishing Company)的主要观点做了介绍和评述。文章主要由三个部分构成。在第一部分里我们较为详尽地介绍和回顾了语用学的渊源和发展,并且指出了语用学现有的研究方向所存在的不足,这样就为作者在后来提出经验现实主义的研究路向奠定了基础。在第二部分里,我们首先介绍了语言学研究中的客观主义范式,然后着重介绍了经验现实主义。在第三部分里,我们探讨了经验现实主义与语用学研究结合的可能。我们认为该书是一本值得一读的语用学著作,尤其是经验现实主义的提出不仅对于语用学研究有价值,而且对于认知语言学来说也是很有借鉴作用的。

Pragmatic Meaning and Cognition by Sophia S.A. Marmaridou (2000), a newly published book on linguistic pragmatics, is featured by its utilization of experiential realism in interpreting pragmatics in general and pragmatic meaning in specific. This paper aims to make a brief introduction and a short review of it that is considered as useful not only to the study of linguistic pragmatics but also to cognitive linguistics as well. Pragmatic Meaning and Cognition can be divided into three parts. In the first part (Chapter One), the author gives a comprehensive review of the origins and development of linguistic pragmatics so as to lay the foundation for the proposal of studying pragmatics and pragmatic meaning from the experiential perspective. This is also what the present paper does in the first section. Furthermore, the author抯 insightful comment on the different approaches to pragmatics is rather helpful for a better understanding of the present research on pragmatics. The second part (Chapter Two), presents the readers with the knowledge of experiential realism compared with the objectivist paradigm in the study of linguistic meaning. This part is the essence and core of the whole book, and this part is really provoking and attractive. Accordingly, in the second section of this paper we briefly summarize the main ideas of the objectivist paradigm and experiential realism. Moreover, we also discuss the author抯 idea of utilizing experiential realism in the study of pragmatics and pragmatic meaning, that is, an experiential definition of pragmatics and pragmatic meaning. The third part covers Chapter Three to Chapter Six of the book. In this part the author studies the pragmatic phenomena of deixis, presupposition, speech acts and implicature by resorting to his experiential approach to pragmatics. We think that Pragmatic Meaning and Cognition is a useful and inspiring book on pragmatics.
