Zhu Xi and Min dialect

朱熹的母语是闽语,他深入了解并研究过闽语。他的著作中有不少关于闽语的记述。他认为方言与古音“暗合”,所以,他被人们批评得最多的《诗集传》的“叶音”,有很大一部分就是以闽音为依据,即以自己所说的闽语来确定古韵,它们跟现代闽方言仍存在对应关系。应该重新估计《诗集传》叶音的语音价值。

Zhu Xi had an in - depth understanding in Min dialect, his mother tongue, on which he once conducted studies. His writings contain numerous descriptions on this dialect. Believing that dialect bears tacit correspondence to the phonology of ancient Chinese, he reconstructed the rhyming structure of Shijing (Old Poetry) largely on the basis of the phonology of the Min dialect as spoken by him. This paper holds that, although often criticized, his reconstruction, known as xieyin and reflected in his work entitled Shijizhuan, a compilation of annotations to Shijing, is worth being revaluated due to the existing correspondence between the two systems.
