E.M.Forster is believed to be one of the most puzzling authors of the twentieth century. The themes in his novels can be clarified and familiarized when looked into from the perspective of the theories of intertextuality.A synchronic intertextual reading reveals that his Italian novels were meant to advocate the Jamesian sumum bonum ,and a diachronic intertextual reading discloses Forsters attempt in his England novels to devise the means by which the sumum bonum can be achieved. An intratextual reading of Maurice and A Passage to India sees the two extreme novels as explications of the intension and extension of Forsters thematic concerns.
