On the Semantic Function of Figures of Speech

修辞格"锦上添花"之功能已经得到公认,但它的另一重要功能--"语义功能"长期以来备受冷落.本文从修辞格的四大分类入手,通过分析<高级英语>课本中的一些实例,论证了英语修辞格能扩充句子的信息含量,收到言简意赅的语用效果.

It is generally agreed that a figure of speech can “add flowers to the brocade”.However,the other function of it is — the information — conveying function,has long stayed in obscurity.This thesis analyzes some rhetoric examples from Advanced English in the light of the four classes of figures of speech,concluding that a sentence,by means of a figure of speech,can mean much in a concise way.
