The image of women in literary works by men before the 19th century has always been a split one. However, with the development of feminism, things have begun to change. In this development, George Eliot has contributed much to the change of the binary images of women in traditional works. A psychoanalytical interpretation of Maggie in The Mill on the Floss demonstrates how Eliot manages to bring the traditionally split female self into a unified one.
