The Relationship between Comprehension and Translation in Foreign Language Learning

在学习外语过程中,不少人将"翻译"视为理解外语的基本手段,然而,理解外语和翻译不是一码事,对外语的理解是要领会,要把握文章的意义、内容和思想,而翻译是在理解原文的基础上,将理解的东西用别的语言形式表现出来。与此同时还要把力量投入到翻译理解力的培养上。

In the course of foreign language learning, some learners tend to regard translation as a means of comprehension, but in fact comprehension and translation are different aspects. To learn a foreign language, one should grasp the essence of the text, while translation means the representation in another language on the basis of comprehending the original. Therefore, great efforts should be made to cultivate the ability of the learner's comprehension without translation.
