New Connotations of "a Good Wife and Loving Mother" Portrayed by the Women Writers During May 4th Movement

"贤妻良母"曾一度被看成是封建女性的代名词。冰心、陈衡哲等"五四"女作家根据自己的人生体验,理智、谨慎地对民族、文化、历史进行审视和反省,扬弃了传统的女性角色。她们对女性标准人格和角色定位做出了准确把握,从思想基础、自身修养和社会尊重等三个方面赋予了贤妻良母新内涵,在文化观念方面为女性解放创造了良好条件。

'A good wife and loving mother' is regarded as the pronoun of a woman in the fudal society. In the period of May 4th Movement, however, some women writers such as Bingxin and Chen-Hengzhe discarded the tradition of portraying such characters. They did so in the light of their own life experiences and their rational and prudent view of the ethical culture and history. They developed the appropriate criteria for portraying the Chinese women characters, namely, from three perspectives of ideology, personal development and social respect.Thus they gave new connotations to the traditional character of 'a good wife and loving mother', and provided good cultural and conceptual conditions for the women liberation movement.
