On Textual Functions of EST Passive Voice from A Pragmatic Perspective

人们对科技英语被动句的研究大部分是在句法平面从翻译角度进行的。本文拟从语用的角度,在语篇层面上对科技英语被动句的语篇功能作一探讨。被动句作为一种信息重组的语用手段,在科技语篇建构中具有如下功能话题确立功能、话题连接功能、话题转换功能、焦点凸显功能、焦点对比功能和语篇衔接与连贯功能。被动句的这些功能通常都是相互作用,共同构建一个完整的语篇,从而确保语篇的连贯。

Most researches on EST passive voice have been done from the point view of translation at the level of syntax. This thesis attempts to study the textual functions of EST passive voice at the textual level from a pragmatic perspective. As a pragmatic device of information reordering in the making of text, EST passive voice has such textual functions as topic-setting, topic-connecting, topic-shifting, focus-highlighting, focus-contrasting and textual cohesion and coherence. These functions usually work side by side to make a text into a semantic whole.
