The Relationship Between the Compradors and the Early Modernization in China

买办在中国早期现代化进程中的作用不容忽视。自鸦片战争以来 ,买办对于分化瓦解传统的自然经济、发展商品经济、投资新式企业、推动中国早期工业化和引进西方文化科学观念等方面都发挥了重要作用 。

As a bridge of the trade between late Qing Dynasty and foreigners,compradors contributed much to early modernization in China.Their going into imports and exports accelerated the process of the collapse of traditional autarkic economy model and the commercialization of agriculture. Dealing with foreign interprises helped them accumulate plenty of money,know the advanced management system,technology and vendition mode of foreign interprises.Then they used what they learned from the foreign to create their own new-type interprises which not only indicated the dayspring of Chinese industry era,but also aroused the Chinese fervor of creating new-type interprises,and started the great change from traditional to modern mode of production in China.It is more important that their contribution to Chinese early modernization was not merely confined to physical level.They introduced and promulgated the western learning, and gave impetus to the development of culture and mentality and laid a foundation to Chinese new-type education.
