Fitzgerald was a representative writer of 'the lost generation' in America in the 1920s and 1930s. he wildly took part in the pursuit of material in the 'Jazz time' and merged himself into his own works. Though got lost in the material pursuit, Fitzgerald could be a cool spectator at the same time, depicting with a sad tone the tragedy of the disillusion of the 'American dream'. His masterpiece The Great Gatsby is actually an elegy of the 'Jazz time'. From the perspective of the different backgrounds of the characters in the novel, the present author tried to point out that they are both 'participators' and 'spectators' at the same time.
