释“殿”

The Interpretation of "Dian"(殿)

“殿”字的形体构造 ,《说文》中“从殳 ,声”的形声字分析不当。“殿”字应是“从 ,从殳”的会意字 ,字形义为“击臀” ,“殿堂”和“殿后”义应是“殿”

The analysis of the structural form of the character dian(殿--at the rear)in huo Wen (Language Interpretation) that 'it is assigned to shu(殳) and  in sound' is unsuitable. Dian(殿--at the rear)should be assigned to, and shu(殳) in image and meaning, and the meaning should be 'beat on the buttock'. The meanings of Diantang (殿堂--palace or temple halls) and dianhou(殿后--bring up the rear)are the extension of the meaning of dian (殿--at the rear).
