Teaching and Learning Theory in Distance Education

A recent experience of reading a distance education text convinced me that those who prepare distance education texts need more professional preparation and while some are well qualified, there are others who need similar qualifications - but those that concentrate on distance education. This is the thesis of this paper. It suggests that they should be trained at least in the theories of teaching and learning, since these theories are as relevant to distance education as they are to traditional face-to-face teaching. In order to do this, theories of teaching and learning are introduced and discussed in relation to distance education and a model of human learning is discussed in considerable detail.
