Explanations of the Tonetic Variation in Xiamen, Suzhou, and Qingyuan(Zhukou) Dialects

厦门、苏州、庆元(竹口)方言的声调系统都有特殊的变异现象,这些变异都是由连调系统和单字调系统的互动造成的,引起这种互动作用的因素是中和型连读变调。连调系统从单字调系统的母体上孳生并逐渐摆脱单字调系统的制约,进而反作用于单字调系统。中和型连调发展到高级阶段的产物,是连调从纯语音层面跨入音义层面的桥梁。

Xiamen, Suzhou and Qingyuan(Zhukou) dialects all have distinctive variances. These variances resulted from interaction between juxtaposition system and word tone system, which was motivated by successive neutralizing tonetic variation. The successive tonetic system was generated from the word tone system, gradually broke away from the latter and finally exerted counter-action on the word tone system. The successive neutralizing tone is a product at the advanced stage of development, which marks the transition of juxtaposition from pure phonetic dimension to semantic dimension.
