摘要
文章首先回顾中国学术界和传媒将萤石球当作夜明珠的观点以及对萤石球的追捧热潮 ,然后追溯李约瑟简单提出夜明珠为萤石的观点及其在中国的传播 ,接着探讨古代夜明珠的基本物性及判别标准 ,提出判别夜明珠的五条准则 :1)夜间自然有光的原则 ,2 )自然产出的原则 ,3)自然的珠状形态原则 ,4 )十分稀有的原则和 5 )非凡价值的原则 ,最后大篇幅分条目陈述廉价萤石不可能是夜明珠的学术论辩理由。
In this paper the notion that fluorite ball is regarded as night-shining jewel and the fashion that fluorite ball is highly valued and being sought after are reviewed. The notion can be traced back to Dr. Joseph Needham's book, only Needham's viewpoint was found to be incomplete and misleading. Five principles were proposed to identify an authentic night-shining jewel, which include night-shining, natural occurrence, natural round shape, particular rarity and high value. However, fluorite ball, including the so-called phosphorescent fluorite, doesn't meet any of the five principles, so can never be the highly precious night-shining jewel in Chinese history.
