The contents of Ca, Sr, Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, Fe, Mn, Cr and Ti in hair of 63 leukemia patients have been determined by XRF. Compared with 115 normal adults, the hair levels of Zn, Cu and Ca in patients of both sexes were significantly decreased and the Pb level was dramatically increased (p<0.05 or p< 0.001). In addition, the hair contents of Ni, Fe, Mn and Cr in male patients were also significantly increased, while the hair Sr content in female patients was significantly decreased (p<0.05 or p< 0.001). It seems that the higher incidence of leukemia in male than in female was related to higher hair levels of Mn, Fe, Ni and Cr.
